WORSHIP
At the heart of the church’s life is our worship of the one God.
Christian worship joyfully ascribes all praise and honor, glory
and power to the triune God. In worship the people of God acknowledge God
present in the world and in their lives. As they respond to God’s claim and
redemptive action in Jesus Christ, believers are transformed and renewed. In
worship the faithful offer themselves to God and are equipped for God’s service
in the world. (Book of Order W-1.1001)
Most worship services focus on events and scripture passages
listed on the liturgical calendar. Special days and seasons, as designated by
the General Assembly and recommended for observance, are printed on each
calendar page. A lectionary for the Lord’s Day lists the significance of the
day and appropriate scripture passages. Also listed are the liturgical colors
of the church seasons: White is used for special days in the redemptive work of
Jesus Christ, such as Christmas and Easter; Purple marks the seasons of
penitence and preparation, Advent and Lent; Red is the color for Pentecost;
Green is used for all other time periods not marked by a specific season
(called Ordinary Time) to represent spiritual growth.
As you can see, color is an important part of the worship
experience. Music is also an important aspect of worship. Hymns and responses
are sung at all worship services. Our choir actively participates in worship
services September through May. (Please see the “Music” link for more
information on our musical programs.)
The Sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated seven times a
year at Brookville Presbyterian Church. These times are: January, Baptism of
the Lord; Sunday prior to the beginning of Lent, Transfiguration of the Lord;
during Lent on Maundy Thursday; mid May to mid June, Pentecost; summer, first
Sunday in August; World Wide Communion, first Sunday in October; end of
November, first Sunday of Advent.
The Brookville Presbyterian Church has an adult choir which
varies in number from 15 to 20 voices. We sing four part music and sing every
Sunday in the worship service from September to June, and also for special
services throughout the year. Rehearsals are on Thursday evening at 6:30 in the
Wilson Sunday School room. Everyone who loves to sing to the Lord is welcome to
join.
The church also has a three octave handbell choir which meets on
Thursday evenings at 7:30 in the Men's Sunday School room in the basement of
the church. Substitute ringers are always needed. A second handbell choir could
be started if there is enough interest. The handbell choir plays often at the
Sunday worship service, and also performs for outside groups when asked.
The church is attempting to start a youth choir for Junior and
Senior high students. It will meet at 9:00 AM before Sunday School. Elementary
age children sing in the regular Sunday School classes and sing in the worship
service occasionally. They call themselves the Holy Hobos, and they sing music
that is integrated into the Sunday School lessons.
Music is a big part of our worship service, and we welcome
anyone who would like to join us in this beautiful way of praising our Lord.
