As many of you know, over the past few weeks the plight of Christians in Iraq has been gaining visibility due to killings and threats on their lives in Mosul. Like most people, I will be the first to acknowledge that my understanding of the history, issues and complexities impacting the Middle East region is sorely lacking. Still, when we hear about this kind of violence directed at any of community, Christian or not, we must find ways to lift our voices in solidarity and use whatever power we may have to intercede. For this reason, Linda, Gradye and I, in consultation with those in our church that best understand the nuances of the situation, have written both a letter to Iraqi Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki, as well as a statement on the violence that is taking place.
Both the letter and statement are available at www.mod.reyes-chow.com, but I would also encourage you to read the complete Presbyterian New Service Story at http://www.pcusa.org/pcnews/2008/08755.htm . Please feel free to post this on your blog, newsletters and other means of communication so we can continue to remember those being persecuted for following their faith.

Rev. Parlette will be offering a story learning workshop on Saturday October 18th from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. in the Education Building. The workshop will focus on techniques for learning a biblical story by heart to share in worship, in a Sunday school class, around a dinner table, or simply for individual devotional use.
Participating in this workshop does not mean that you have to get up and tell a story in front of anyone, you can simply come and see how it’s done. There is no commitment.
Rev. Parlette has been working towards being certified as a biblical Storyteller through the Network of Biblical Storytellers and this workshop is a requirement for his training. So come and join us for an interesting morning.

The Presbyterian Church of Brookville has organized a CROP WALK for Sunday, October 12th, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The walk will be 5 miles in length, starting at The Presbyterian Church and traveling up Valley Street, past the high school, across the boulevard to Phil & Kay Ruffner’s house and then back to the church for refreshments and awards.
CROP Walk is a program of Church World Service and the proceeds go towards hunger relief programs in the United States and abroad. Their motto is “We Walk Because They Walk.” Millions of people around the world walk long distances every day to get water for daily needs; bring home food for their families; find safe shelter in times of war or disaster; find wood for fuel and fodder for livestock; go to school; farm distant fields; take goods and produce to market; and find medical care when illness strikes.
Everyone is invited to join the CROP Walk, or sponsor a CROP Walker. If you would like to walk, or need additional information, please call the church office at
849-2413. 25% of everything raised here will go directly to the Brookville Ministerial Food Pantry!!
